The purpose of a diabetic eye screening is to carry out initial patient assessment by identifying various retinal eye diseases and having the ability to differentiate between sight threatening and non-sight threatening lesions, thus preventing blindness. A decision is then made as to refer diabetic and non-diabetic abnormalities to specialist consultants or return the patients to the screening programme.
Students will shadow/assist in a retinal screening clinic at Boston Health Centre. Screening involves the assessment of a patient’s visual acuity (eye test), instilling eye drops and undertaking screening/photography of the patient’s retina. Some patients may also have an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) image taken, depending upon their current level of pathology.
Some days may also include shadowing the admin team to understand their daily tasks and how this helps the department function to provide an effective service for patients. This may include routine admin tasks as well as managing patient data to ensure that they receive timely referrals and appointments.
