Degree Apprentice: Trainee Healthcare Science Practitioner (Radiation Physics)
We are looking for a technically minded, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the radiation protection and radiology physics team as a degree apprentice.
This post is for someone educated to A-Level standard in a scientific discipline, wishing to study towards a career as a scientist within the radiation protection and radiology physics department.
As part of the degree apprenticeship, you will be in full-time professional employment, learning in the workplace in a structured delivery pattern, supported by both the university and the Trust. You will complete a funded degree at University of Cumbria as part of a level 6 apprenticeship resulting in a B.Sc.(Hons) in Healthcare Science (Radiation Physics). The practical aspects of the training will be delivered Trustwide.
The training is for a three year period starting September 2019 to August 2022. Upon completion it is expected that there will be an opportunity to apply for a permanent post.
What’s a Degree Apprenticeship?
Degree apprenticeships are a new type of programme offered by employers and universities. Whilst employed, students can achieve a full bachelor's or master's degree as part of their apprenticeship, funded by the employer.
The programmes are developed by employers, universities, and professional bodies working in partnership, and offer a fantastic opportunity for students to earn and learn without the debt from the traditional university route.
Degree apprenticeships combine working with studying part-time at a university. Apprentices are employed throughout the programme, and spend part of their time at university and the rest with their employer.
About the Department
Radiation protection and radiology physics is a scientific service concerned with the safe use of ionising (X-rays, radioactive materials) and non-ionising radiation (lasers, IPL, UV, MRI, ultrasound) for the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
This is achieved by providing a comprehensive quality assurance and radiation protection service to ionising and non-ionising radiation users.
Within this service staff undertake regular surveys and assessments of radiological facilities to ensure dose and performance levels do not fall outside nationally and locally set criteria.
Surveys cover radiological and ancillary equipment performance and image quality, as well as staff and patient doses. Assessments cover equipment condition and suitability for use, dose levels associated with technique or equipment, and risk assessments. Advice and guidance on making improvements is also provided

What we’re looking for
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is keen to learn, and possesses the qualifications suitable to enrol with University of Cumbria for this course:
Sufficient points to gain admission to degree level apprenticeship BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science Medical Physics (Radiation Physics).
112-120 tariff points from maximum of 3 A-levels, to include A-level in Physics with minimum of 40 points.
Evidence of study at GCSE level, achieving grade C/4 in English Language, and grade B/5 in Mathematics and Science.
Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate an aptitude for the role, and be able to commence from 2nd September in order to meet the University course dates.
Students currently undertaking A-Level examinations are encouraged to apply indicating their predicted grades. In these instances a conditional offer may be given subject to actual grades.
Candidates MUST have the ability to travel.
