"Role overview:
This placement offers school students the opportunity to observe how an orthopaedic outpatient clinic operates and to learn about careers within the NHS. Students will be supervised at all times and will not provide clinical care or undertake any tasks involving patient treatment.
Key activities:
Observe the patient journey through an orthopaedic clinic, including reception, nursing assessment and medical consultation.
Where appropriate, shadow members of the multidisciplinary team, such as consultants, junior doctors, specialist nurses, physiotherapists and administrative staff.
Learn about common musculoskeletal conditions and how they are assessed and managed.
Observe professional communication, teamwork, confidentiality and patient-centred care.
Participate in non-clinical activities where suitable.
Discuss education, training routes and career opportunities in orthopaedics and healthcare.
Boundaries and supervision
Students must remain with their nominated supervisor and follow local hospital policies at all times. They must not examine patients, access patient records, give clinical advice, assist with procedures, or be left alone with patients. Patient consent must be obtained before students observe consultations.
Expected conduct
Students are expected to be punctual, appropriately dressed, respectful and professional. They must maintain patient confidentiality during and after the placement and promptly raise any concerns with their supervisor.ir supervisor."
