The ward designated for student placement, Ward 5A at Pilgrim Hospital, primarily serves as a facility for both elective and emergency surgical patients. Elective patients are those scheduled in advance for planned surgeries, while emergency patients require immediate surgical intervention due to urgent medical conditions. Additionally, Level 1 surgical care, which refers to basic or initial surgical management often involving fewer complex procedures, is also administered within Ward 5A. This dual role underscores the ward's significance in providing comprehensive surgical services, catering to a broad spectrum of patient needs from routine to urgent cases.
Occasionally, a small number of exceptional patients with unusual or complex medical conditions may also be included in 5a. This placement is exclusively observational, as students are not permitted to engage in any practical activities.
