One-day observational shadowing placement within General Surgery under the supervision of Mr Sridhar Dharmavaram, Consultant Gastrointestinal/Colorectal Surgeon. The student will:
- Observe outpatient general surgery and colorectal clinics (history-taking, examination, management plan discussions, and MDT discussions where appropriate).
- Observe inpatient ward rounds for general surgical and colorectal patients (assessment, documentation, and multidisciplinary communication).
- Observe theatre sessions (laparoscopic and open general and colorectal procedures) from a designated observer area, with appropriate PPE and a briefing on theatre etiquette.
- Observe pre-assessment, consent discussions, and post-operative care discussions (as appropriate and permitted).
- Learn about hernia surgery, colorectal surgery, and laparoscopic general surgery pathways.
- Discuss career pathways in general surgery, training, and research opportunities (time permitting).
The student will NOT:
- Perform any clinical procedures or invasive tasks.
- Access patient records independently or handle confidential data without explicit supervision or permission.
- Be left alone with patients or in clinical areas.
- Operate or interfere with medical equipment.
