Overview
This placement provides an introduction to the multidisciplinary care of patients affected by cancer. The student will observe how different professionals contribute to diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing support, while learning about patient pathways and the importance of compassionate communication.
Key Learning Objectives
• Understand the role of Cancer Services within the hospital and wider NHS.
• Observe how patients are supported throughout their cancer journey.
• Learn about multidisciplinary team (MDT) working and communication.
• Gain insight into cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.
• Develop awareness of confidentiality, infection control, and patient dignity.
Typical Activities
• Shadowing Cancer Nurse Specialists and attending MDT meetings (as appropriate).
• Observing outpatient clinics and patient information sessions.
• Learning about administrative processes such as referrals, data entry, and patient tracking.
• Assisting with patient information packs and health promotion materials.
• Attending staff briefings or health education events (if available).
• Supporting clinical staff in clinical areas and observing
• Communicate with patients and support with activities under supervision
