Whilst on placement, students will have the opportunity to shadow staff within the department, gaining first-hand insight into the role of dietitians and the multidisciplinary teams they work alongside. Students will accompany staff on ward visits and attend outpatient clinics, observing how care is delivered across a wide range of patient groups.
Subject to patient consent, students may also sit in on discussions between clinicians and patients, enabling them to observe how care plans are developed, how advice is communicated, and how patient needs are assessed and supported. This will provide valuable context and an overview of the varied activities within the department.
- The department delivers services across a broad spectrum of clinical areas, which may include:
- Nutritional support and enteral feeding – supporting patients who are unable to meet their nutritional needs through diet alone.
- Obesity management – working with patients to develop tailored weight management strategies.
- Nutrition in children – supporting growth and development through specialist dietary care.
- Renal nutrition – managing dietary needs for patients with chronic kidney disease.
- Cardiovascular health – providing nutrition advice for patients with coronary heart disease.
- Stroke rehabilitation – ensuring nutritional needs are met during recovery.
- Diabetes management – advising patients on diet to support blood sugar control and overall health.
- Mental health services – understanding the links between nutrition and mental wellbeing.
