Ashby Ward is an 18-bedded unit providing rehabilitation to those who have traumatic/acquired brain injuries and people with long-term neurological conditions who need complex rehabilitation. Speech and Language assesses and provides support for speech, language, and communication impairments, including aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia of speech, cognitive-communication disorder, and alternative augmentative communication (AAC) tools. Speech and Language Therapy also assesses and supports dysphagia (swallowing impairments), contributes to tracheostomy care and weaning, and assesses those with Prolonged Disorder of Consciousness (PDOC).
During the work experience day(s) you will likely be:
Shadowing the Speech and Language Therapy Team's morning handover and session planning.
Observing Speech and Language Therapy assessments and/or intervention.
Observing multidisciplinary discussions and/or joint sessions with Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Neuropsychology, Doctors, and Nurses.
Observing the writing of documentation, reports, and the preparation of resources.
You may be observing the Speech and Language Therapist and the Speech and Language Therapy assistant.
