This placement is for students considering a career in Diagnostic Radiography only.
The Radiology departments in the United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals train diagnostic radiography students from Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Lincoln.
Whilst on placement, the work experience student will shadow members of staff and observe their day to day duties. They will be briefed on the process of justifying x-ray requests, the importance of positioning in Radiography, and selecting the correct exposure factors etc.
Placements will usually take place in the general x-ray department where inpatient, outpatient, GP and A&E examinations are undertaken.
Opportunities may also include time within the following areas:
- MRI: Where strong magnetic fields and radio waves are used to produce detailed images/slices of the inside of the body.
- Ultrasound: A non-invasive form of imaging where high frequency sound waves are used to create images of soft tissues and organs of the body.
- CT: A form of detailed imaging using a series of x-rays which the computer converts into cross-sectional slices.
- Fluoroscopy: Continuous x-rays are used to diagnose conditions and guide medical procedures. E.g. Barium swallows and meals, arthrograms.
Placement will be on an observational basis with no patient contact. Students are not allowed in the X-Ray/CT rooms and will remain behind protective screens. Access to the controlled area in MRI is sometimes permitted after completion of the safety checklist.
As the Radiology departments are very busy, and students can only observe, one day is typically sufficient to give an overview of Diagnostic Radiography. However, for those with a strong interest in Radiography, a two-day placement can sometimes be arranged.
This is a placement for persons interested in Radiography as a career, not for potential medical students or Radiology work experience for qualified medical staff.
Age Eligibility - 16+ (Year 12 onwards)
