Observing a range of Cardiology Diagnostic Tests to include:
This placement will be split into three sessions.
Echocardiography – this is cardiac ultrasound and will involve watching patients have their images taken and then sitting with the cardiac physiologist to interpret the images and to write a report on the findings. This may involve ward work, clinic work or specialist forms of echocardiography such as Stress echocardiography or Transesophageal Echocardiography (TOE) – this will depend on staff availability and which patient lists running during the individual's placement.
Pacemakers/Cardiac Devices – this will involve working with the cardiac physiologists in pacemaker clinic, programming and troubleshooting cardiac devices, checking device parameters, and/or watching pacemaker implantation in the cardiac catheter lab - this will depend on staff availability and which patient lists running during the individuals placement.
Coronary angiography/PCI (stents) – this will involve sitting with the cardiac physiologist in the cardiac catheter lab and watching patients have their coronary arteries image and if necessary unblocked with balloons/stents. This may also involve work with acutely unwell patients as the Lincolnshire Heart Centre is an emergency department for patients in the community who are having a heart attack and for patients in the community who have a cardiac arrest.
The sessions will most likely run 08:00-14:00, across Mon-Fri, depending on staff availability and individual preference. For individuals with an interest in echocardiography, Specialist Echo currently has lists on a Tuesday and Thursday.
If the individual has a particular interest in a certain area of Cardiology/the cardiac physiologist job role then please make this known before the placement as the work experience can be amended to accommodate those interests.
