The Community SLT team assess and provides support for dysphagia (swallowing impairments) and communication impairments, including aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia of speech, cognitive-communication disorder and voice. Our patients include those with progressive neurological conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, Motor Neuron Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Huntington's disease and dementia. We work closely with patients, families and carers to provide alternative augmentative communication (AAC) tools. We see patients in their own homes as well as at health clinics, care homes and community hospitals.
During the work experience day(s), you will likely be:
- Shadowing the Speech and Language Therapist during a typical day.
- Observing Speech and Language Therapy assessments and/or intervention
- Observing the writing of documentation, reports, and the preparation of resources.
You may be observing the Speech and Language Therapist and the Speech and Language Therapy assistant.
