Programme Information

The 3½-day programme is aimed at lower sixth students who are serious about wishing to pursue a career in medicine and who are also academically able to achieve the grades necessary to enter medical school. The current minimum A level grades needed are AAA, (Grade A in Biology and Chemistry is the norm plus a further A level at Grade A). It is accepted that it is advantageous to students applying for a place at Medical School through UCAS to have undertaken some work experience or voluntary work in a hospital or general practice environment.

The programme we run will aim to give students a range of experiences that will stand them in good stead when making their UCAS application to this highly competitive field. It will give them an insight into what it is like to be a junior doctor in a hospital in the 21st century.

Students will spend the 3½ days based in the Undergraduate Medical Education Centre. They will have the opportunity to shadow a junior doctor, visit theatres, practice their interview technique and undertake an ethics workshop. Students will also have the opportunity to try their hand at some basic clinical skills such as suturing and cannulation using special manikins in our clinical skills lab.

Students will be provided with a portfolio and will be asked to complete a Reflective Diary of the events of each day. At the end of the programme they will receive a certificate of completion.
