Aspiring Medics Sixth Form Programme 2018
Having delivered a highly successful programme for the past 8 years, ULHT are pleased to announce the 2018 programme dates for student applications:
Programme 1: Monday 9th April to Thursday 12th April 2018
Programme 2: Tuesday 29th May to Friday 1st June 2018
See “Application Process” for closing date
The 3½-day programme is aimed at lower sixth students who are serious about wishing to pursue a career in medicine and who are also academically able to achieve the grades necessary to enter medical school. The current minimum A level grades needed are AAA, (Grade A in Biology and Chemistry is the norm plus a further A level at Grade A). It is accepted that it is advantageous to students applying for a place at Medical School through UCAS to have undertaken some work experience or voluntary work in a hospital or general practice environment.
The programme we run will aim to give students a range of experiences that will stand them in good stead when making their UCAS application to this highly competitive field. It will give them an insight into what it is like to be a junior doctor in a hospital in the 21st century.
Students will spend the 3½ days based in the Undergraduate Medical Education Centre. They will have the opportunity to shadow a junior doctor, visit theatres, practice their interview technique and undertake an ethics workshop. Students will also have the opportunity to try their hand at some basic clinical skills such as suturing and cannulation using special manikins in our clinical skills lab.
Students will be provided with a portfolio and will be asked to complete a Reflective Diary of the events of each day. At the end of the programme they will receive a certificate of completion.
Places on each course are limited to 20. Students will be asked to state a preference on application. If more applications are received than we have places other supporting information provided will be used to allocate.
Eligibility: Students must be aged 16 or over and undertaking AS level studies.
The following items should be included in the application:
