Insight to Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and language therapists provide life-changing treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing. They help people who, for physical or psychological reasons, have problems speaking and communicating. Patients range from children whose speech is slow to develop, to older people whose ability to speak has been impaired by illness or injury. It also includes treatment for those who have difficulty with eating or swallowing.

Whilst on individuals will have an overview of the therapy service in an acute hospital, and profession specific information on Speech and Language Therapy and the unique contribution to patient care.
Individuals will have the opportunity to observe how our patients are identified as needing Speech and Language Therapy, routine Speech and Language Therapy assessments and interventions to enable the patient to achieve their own individual goals for discharge. There will be some discussion on other services in the community who we refer to. Individuals will assist and observe Speech and Language Therapists and assistants in a range of tasks on the inpatient wards.
